Google Adwords Keyword Planner is a free tool that provides metrics to optimize your website for getting organic traffic. You can use keyword planner to identify potential keywords and know how much search volume the keyword receives every month.
How to use Google Keyword Planner?
To use Google Adwords Planner you need a Google AdWords account at first place. So, sign up for Google Adwords account and it will ask for some information about business and campaign if you plan to go for paid advertising. Just enter some information and complete the registration process. You must keep in mind, you don’t have to run an active campaign to use Google Keyword Planner. Just a sample campaign is enough and you can keep in on pause status to prevent from running. Once you fully set up your Adwords account, login to see your Google Adwords home page.
In the Google Adwords dashboard, click on the Tools and Analysis menu click on Keyword Planner.
How to do Keyword Research for SEO?
It is easy to identify buyer intent keywords and optimize your website using Google keyword Planner. Here is, how you can use Keyword Planner to identify the right keyword for your website.
When your Adwords account is loaded with Keyword Planner, you will be asked to select one from the three options available.
- Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category
- Get search volume data and trends
- Multiply keyword lists to get new keywords
You can start your Keyword Research with the first option: Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category.
Enter your product or service in the first field of new page. This is your seed keyword. I’m going to enter it as Internet Marketing and leave the next 2 text fields empty.
In the targeting section, you have to choose your target audience by country and language. Don’t make changes to Google and search partners and negative keywords option as of now. If you want more customized search, then, you can filter keywords with criteria like minimum number of search required in the appropriate section.
I’m teaching you the simplest way, by leaving few options unchanged (in default mode), so it would not get you confused too much if you are a beginner to Google Keyword Planner.
Now, click on Get ideas and it ill display the search volume data in detail.
Average monthly searches for all data is a combination of search volume for all the keywords listed below.
Let’s start with keyword planner list.
The top section in the table is the data for exact head keyword. That is; the target keyword, you typed in the product or service field in previous page. You can find average monthly search volume for the keyword in the next field. Column next to search volume is the competition, where you will be shown how much are advertisers competing for the keyword. If the competition is high, it means more advertisers are interested paying for the keyword. Suggested bid is, the amount which you will have to pay, if you want to rank for this keyword, if you go for paid search campaigns. You can omit it as of now.
You can look for other keyword suggestions and their average monthly search volume in the below list found. I would suggest you to select 2-3 low competition & long tail keywords and write content based on that to get ranked higher in Google.

Before starting to draft your first blog post, you must know how you can use Keyword Planner to identify Long Tail keywords.
When you are done getting a list of keyword suggestions from Google keyword planner, look for Download button just below the top row which gives data for your seed keyword.
Download the statistics in Excel CSV file and save it, to find the best keyword for SEO. The statistics for seed keyword and keyword ideas look something like the one below.
Delete the Adgroup column and insert a new column between keyword column and currency column. Enter the formulae given below in heading cell of newly added column, which is cell B1.
This will show you the count of words in the respective cell in the keyword column. Copy the same formulae to all the cells in the column.
Replace the column header as Words count.
Now, go to Data menu in the excel sheet. Click on Z-A sort to list the keywords in descending order.
Here, you can find the keywords with more number of words listing at top. Whereas, keywords with lesser words listing at the bottom. This will help you identify keywords for which there is less competition and you can easily rank for them.
Check the keyword with 7 words “best internet marketing company in the world” and the keyword with 5 words “how to do online marketing”, the longer the keyword, the chances to get ranked in the first page of google are higher.
Apart from selecting long tail keywords, you also need to consider other factors like Competition, Keyword difficulty, CPC and sufficient search volume, etc. You can use the same excel sheet to find search volume and CPC. For competition, you can refer the competition column in the excel, which is numbered from 0 to 1. The same is mentioned in KW planner as low, medium and high. But, as I mentioned earlier, competition is something which you can look only if you are planning to go for paid ad campaigns. So, for organic traffic SEO, you need to look at Keyword Difficulty.
Keyword Difficulty determines how difficult it is to rank for a keyword in organic methods. Unfortunately, Google Keyword Planner doesn’t have an option to identify Keyword Difficulty, in that case, I use SEMRUSH, which is a paid but another efficient tool for Keyword Research.
Keyword Difficulty is measured from 0 to 100. KD with 0 represents, no data available or easy to rank and 100 represents very difficult to rank for the keyword. Usually, keyword difficult ranks in SEMRUSH starts from 35 in most cases. Another advantage of having SEMRUSH over Google Keyword Planner is, you can know average traffic volume in numbers. Google KW Planner gives it in range. Say, for example, for Internet Marketing, google gives an estimate of 10K to 100K, where as SemRush gives the average estimate as 8100. From my experience, if you just want to know the search volume for a keyword, then you can use keyword planner to identify it. But, if you want to really rank for a keyword and improve your webpages in Google, then, you should certainly use tools like SEMRUSH that gives more in-depth details.
